Evaluating CREP Riparian Buffers in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed

Meeting Description:

Riparian buffers play an important role in mitigation programs aimed at cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay. The Bay watershed includes over 20,000 forested buffer projects that have been funded by USDA's Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program. To better understand the status and outcomes of this considerable investment, USDA’s Farm Service Agency has formed a collaborative research team with other USDA agencies (Agricultural Research Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Forest Service), Penn State University, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Now in its second year, the project includes studies of site conditions of 150 CREP riparian buffers in PA, MD and VA, evaluation of how well CREP sites intercept runoff, understanding of the diverse set of ecosystem services that can be offered by riparian buffers and preliminary inferences regarding the siting, design and management of riparian buffers.
