The EAC and the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) are hosting two Accessible Voting Technology Initiative (AVTI) webinars in May and June 2014. As a follow-up to the AVT webinars in January 2014, these webinars are intended to share the results of the AVTI research that can be used to improve elections and the voting process, and to initiate discussions on accessibility in voting.
This webinar will focus on accessibility addressed in the Presidential Commission on Election Administration (PCEA) report, the impact of AVTI research on their findings, and applying AVT research results to the upcoming 2014 election.
Election officials are especially encouraged to attend. Manufacturers, researchers, accessibility advocates, and the general public are also welcome to attend and participate in the discussions. BACKGROUND: In FY 2009 and FY 2010, Congress provided funds to the EAC to develop a research program to continue to support accessible voting technology. In September 2010, EAC awarded a $500,000 grant for the Military Heroes Initiative to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF). Read more about it here. In 2011, EAC awarded $7,000,000 to support research on technologies and approaches to meet the challenge of making voting accessible for all eligible voters. Grants were awarded to ITIF and Clemson University. ITIF funded numerous projects to improve accessible election technology. The Election Center, on behalf of Clemson University, conducted four RAAV training sessions in 2012 to receive input on the issue of voting accessibility.
