Meeting Description:

Please join us to learn about the newly updated and recently launched Impact Survey, a full-service online survey tool designed for public library staff to use when they want to survey their community about public access technology services at the library, and how to improve those services. The Impact Survey evolved from the 2009 IMPACT Study and Opportunity for All report and makes the complex job of surveying patrons easy, fast, and at no cost to library staff. 

Libraries can now visit the Impact Survey website ( and use the tool in their own libraries. This webinar goes through the nuts and bolts of how to connect to and implement the Impact Survey, including:  

  1. How to sign up and connect to the Impact Survey
  2. How to implement the survey in your library and maximize patron response rates
  3. How to use survey results to advocate for your library, and inform strategic planning, and better serve your communities
  4. Improve your ranking with the Edge and other evaluation metrics
  5. FAQ about the Impact Survey
This webinar is part of a series of webinars exploring the Edge Initiative Benchmarks. This session focuses on Benchmark 4, which includes: The library gathers feedback from the community about its public technology needs. A coalition of leading library and local government organizations are working on Edge, including The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Urban Libraries Council, TechSoup Global, and more. The Edge Initiative is a voluntary assessment program that provides libraries with benchmarks, best practices, tools and resources that support continuous improvement and reinvestment in public technology services. Edge helps libraries connect their services to community priorities. Edge will be available to public libraries nationwide in January 2014.

Samantha Becker

Samantha Becker is the Research Manager of the U.S. IMPACT Study, a research group at the University of Washington Information School that focuses on public libraries, public access technology, and digital inclusion barriers and policy. Much of her work is aimed at helping libraries and community technology centers leverage information to improve outcomes for their clients and support sustainability, including developing tailored evaluation frameworks, data gathering strategies, data analysis approaches, and putting the results to work in planning and advocacy. She is also interested in how new adult users gain the skills to use technology and how to improve digital literacy training to better address their learning needs. She holds master’s degrees in Library and Information Science and Public Administration from the University of Washington.

Brenda has been a librarian for more than 15 years. She has delivered training and education for the Northeast Kansas Library System, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, WebJunction, the Public Library Association, Emporia State University, UIUC's Certified Public Library Administrator program, and more. When she's not thinking about libraries and learning, she's spending time with her husband and three year old son at their home in Lawrence, Kansas.
