WEBINAR 12: Medication Assisted Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder: A Guide for Primary Care Providers

Meeting Description:

This is the 12th in a series of 12 monthly webinars on medication assisted treatments (MAT) in primary care settings created by the California Society of Addiction Medicine with the support of a grant from the California Health Care Foundation. No Pharma money was used in creating this series.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common in primary care where the bulk of these patients are seen -often for its complications- but medications to treat AUD remain underutilized in this setting. Primary care physicians can and should prescribe medications to help patients reduce their alcohol use. This practical webinar will cover the basics of when to provide medications for this disorder and what patient characteristics to keep in mind when choosing from the 4 FDA approved medications available.

Learning Objectives - After attending participants will be able to:

  • Name 4 FDA-approved medications and 1 other efficacious medication for AUD
  • Identify adverse effects, major risks, and contradictions of these AUD medications
  • Name 3 patient characteristics that can be used to select appropriate AUD medication
  • Name which AUD medications can be used with which specific AUD patient populations
