This webinar in the Family Law Education for Women (FLEW) series discusses the different types of immigration status for non-citizen women in Canada and how status may be affected by their partner and the breakdown of their relationship. It explains the April 2017 changes in immigration law, specifically the removal of conditional permanent residence for sponsored spouses/partners and what this means for women who want to leave an abusive relationship. The webinar will also discuss legal options and tips for staying safe. METRAC's Program Lawyer, Silmy Abdullah, will co-present with Immigration lawyer, Caitlin Maxwell of Equity Legal and the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic.

Caitlin Maxwell is a Toronto-based lawyer who practices immigration and refugee law. She is the founder and principal lawyer of Equity Legal and also works as a staff lawyer at the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic.  In both her private practice and her work at the clinic, she regularly provides advice and representation to women who have experienced violence.  Caitlin was called to the bar of Ontario in 2012.  Prior to starting her own practice, she articled and practiced law at Jackman, Nazami & Associates. In 2015, she was awarded the inaugural Women’s Law Association of Ontario/Lerners LLP Elizabeth Grace Emerging Leaders Award in recognition of her work with immigrant women at risk of sexual violence and abuse. 
 

Silmy Abdullah

Silmy Abdullah is Program Lawyer and Legal Information Coordinator at METRAC. She completed her law degree at the University of Ottawa and was called to the Bar in 2013. She also holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto. Silmy has experience working both in the private and non-profit sector, focusing on human rights and women’s issues.
