The Nuts & Bolts of Preparing for PHAB Accreditation: How to do it and How NACCHO Can Help


Meeting Description:
This 90-minute webinar, the 20th in NACCHO’s Accreditation Preparation & QI Series, will feature representatives from three local health departments currently applying or preparing for PHAB accreditation. The health directors or accreditation coordinators from these agencies, Coconino County Health Department (AZ), Spokane Regional Health District (WA), and Three Rivers District Health Department (KY), will provide answers to some crucial questions for health departments to consider including how to engage staff, how to select an accreditation team, how to choose appropriate documentation, and more. NACCHO will also provide information about the resources available to LHDs as they prepare for accreditation.

This webinar will be in a round-robin format and will be moderated by NACCHO staff.

April Harris, MPH, CHES, Accreditation & QI Coordinator, Three Rivers District Health Department (KY)

April Harris is the Accreditation and Quality Improvement Coordinator for Three Rivers District Health Department, in Owenton, Kentucky. April has been with TRDHD for 6 years and has been focused on Accreditation and QI efforts for one year. She earned her BS in Public Health at Western Kentucky University and her MPH from the University of Kentucky.

Torney Smith, MEd, Administrator, Spokane Regional Health District (WA)

Torney Smith is the administrator for the Spokane Regional Health District assuring operational vitality and that the functions of Washington State’s Public Health Improvement Plan are implemented.

Torney is a member of Washington State University’s Health Policy Analysis Advisory Board, serves on the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) standards workgroup, as a BETA site reviewer and is a member of NACCHO’s Accreditation Preparation and Quality Improvement committee and its Board of Directors.  He has co-chaired the Washington State Standards Workgroup for the public health system for ten years and participates in national public health accreditation and quality improvement efforts.  

He has been active with the Public Health Informatics Institute, the Northwest Institute for Public Health Practice, the Management Academy for Public Health, the Medical Informatics Committee of the Spokane Medical Society and Common Ground.

Barbara Worgess, Chief Health Officer, Coconino County Health Department (AZ)

Barbara L. Worgess is the Chief Health Officer of the Coconino County Public Health Services District in Flagstaff, Arizona. She has been in this position for almost 14 years.

She has extensive experience with accreditation in public health. Her department was recognized as a "Project Public Health Ready" pilot site in Round 3, and re-recognized in 2010. Additionally, she has served on several workgroups for PHAB and NACCHO: PHAB Standards Development Workgroup, PHAB Tribal Standards Development Workgroup member, NACCHO Project Public Health Ready Workgroup Chair.

Coconino County Health Department was a PHAB beta test site and Worgess served as a beta test site visitor.
